We’ll begin by learning the basics of the square foot gardening system. This unique method only takes up to 20% of the space, it saves you 90% of the water you’d normally use, there’s no weeding, no thinning, and there’s no heavy digging or turning of soil. You only need 3 tools with this system-a pencil, a trowel, and a pair of scissors. We’ll then cover the topics of soil-what a good growing medium should be, a significant amount of time on composting, and then the spacing of crops. Next, we will spend a good amount of time on protecting your garden. You’ll know how to extend your fall harvest well into the season and if it’s your desire to do it all winter, you’ll see how that’s done as well. I’ve done it for 2 years now and the food that comes out of the garden in the winter is exceptional! Please bring a pair of garden gloves as this is a hands-on workshop. I guide you through every step of the way. When you leave you’ll be ready to build your box, fill it with soil, put a grid on it, and then start planting for your fall harvest. Most people are putting their gardens away on Labor Day weekend. Not a SFGer-we’ve still got 6-8 weeks of easy gardening to go!
