020113 sfg2This one of a kind gardening class will have you wishing you had started a lot earlier to enjoy such a wonderful harvest.  For those wishing to feed themselves or their families year round and become truly self-reliant, this is the class for you.  If there’s snow on the ground or we’ve had freezing weather, so what?  This class is based on the square foot gardening system.  I expand on several things: what to do  with your compost bins(spring isn’t that far away), how to protect your gardens in the most rugged winters in Salt Lake City, and finally, what crops can successfully be grown during this time of year.  This will be my 3rd year harvesting during all four seasons.  It requires a little bit of work, but if the food supply was interrupted for a significant amount of time, could you feed your families?  I’m aware of many people who store up to a years supply or more of food in their homes.  While this is a great idea, what if you don’t have the space to store all of that, or the money to purchase all of it?  Seeds and soil are a lot less expensive than buying food storage items.  And the right knowledge about what crops can be grown in the winter season will have you looking forward to eating out of your garden at a time when all other gardens have been closed for weeks.  Nobody in your neighborhood will be eating fresh greens.  Even if they by them at the most expensive organic stores, it’s been at least a week since being harvested.  I had some friends over for dinner several times this past winter.  After tasting a salad of things they’ve never eaten or seen before, they asked me where I got it.  When I told them it was from my garden, they didn’t believe me-until I walked them out and showed them.  We will start this class inside with a PowerPoint presentation to cover the basics.  We will finish out in the covered gardens-with a structure that you will learn how to build for about $100 or even less.  You’re really going to enjoy this-you will even get to taste some of the different things that I grow.  Who said gardening in Utah was only done in the spring, summer, and fall?  Not here-we’ve made it a year-round event.  Not only do we save a lot of money in the process, we also eat some really, really, really tasty food.  Give it some thought.  Cost for class is $25 per person.  Please leave a contact name, email address, or cell phone number in case I have to cancel class for some reason.  Thank you.
